Bernita advises financial institutions, securities brokers, asset managers, fintech companies, payment service providers and technology businesses on a broad range of financial services regulatory and compliance matters. Her practice spans banking and securities regulation, licensing and authorisation, governance and conduct, cross-border financial services activities, and emerging areas such as virtual assets, payments, fintech, AML/CTF, and technology risk. She regularly advises on matters involving the regulatory regimes administered by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Securities and Futures Commission and Insurance Authority. Bernita's arrival further strengthens Howse Williams' ability to advise clients on the regulatory challenges and opportunities arising from innovation across the financial services sector, including digital assets, tokenisation, stablecoins, fintech and other emerging technologies.
Before joining Howse Williams, Bernita practised at leading international law firms and led a team within the Securities and Futures Commission’s Intermediaries Department. These roles gave her first-hand experience of Hong Kong’s financial-services regulatory framework, supervisory approach and regulatory expectations. Earlier in her career, she worked as a banker.
Drawing on her experience in private practice, regulatory supervision and the financial-services industry, Bernita provides practical, commercially focused advice on complex regulatory matters. Her appointment reflects the continued expansion of Howse Williams’ ranked Financial Services Regulatory and Fintech practice and reinforces the firm’s commitment to supporting clients as they navigate innovation, regulatory change and evolving challenges across the financial-services sector.
